so i am starting fieldwork and i am trying to catch up with field notes. this is bein a bit hard with this modality of being both in my "porteño life" and in the field, ie i do not have quite nights r dead moments as much as i do have when i remove myself form the ordinary and travel to meet friends i work with. anyways it is hard to make the thick descriptions and also get to the point of puting down my ideas, i guess i will leav the separation. also for confidentiality, no personal references will be made here. i am also finding hard to keep my idea of making all field note in english. so thick description will be in spanish and in notebook.
anyway i am also having two levels of notes, one of the "neighbourhood" which still has a resemblance to a "field site" other for moments which are not claerly my topic and then maybe this blog. anyways two things are jumping with stregth, the place i chose to work is not just a little bit saturated but just overloaded of poeple doing things. form anthropologists, to aid association, the church, and documentalist. the other day i was chatting about my intentions and the verb people used was "participar". so ok that is my entry with some poeple, one more person going there to intervene in some way and that will eventually give things in return. The question is of course how much i will harass them and how to avoid proposing things that they will accept only out of politness.
but then i am starting a tour around all this institutions that have worked in here and maybe my focus is that intersection. they no doubt are some of the material means for movement and trigger it. i can´t stop thinking that they probably get tired, so if i was sharing the feeling of overwhelming political patronage in the province, maybe here the "accompaning" agents are the burden. (i use, and many of us use this word, just as ngos have pressed with fire the word "participation" and "representation" in a way i can´t belive, all words used for a perfomance of involvment in a movement, but ooo i am more and more convinced that politics is so much somewhere else). so i am thinking about including all this agents, including "us" the anthropologists in the ethnography. there is something impressive that trasverses and produces some type of subjectivity about our love for the chaco.
so circulating objects seem to be central here too, in one day i have noticed that handicrafts flow constantly and smoothly.

contactar
so i just spent a couple of morning hours trying to figure up how to get information about the university de san martin, with no success. i just found out that following the visits of his fellow italian philosophers roberto esposito was here and we never found out about it. the question is then who is the we, and then yes, people in anthropology at the university of buenos aires. it is probably that the "networks" of those institutions do not touch each other, even when we do have acquaintances there. this is not unlique ubc where the departments seem to work in "quintas" too, but just differently organized. in any case it reminds me the verb "contactar" i tend to use so much in here. how do i get information, and i provide information to others is something done not through an institution or a place but by contacting someone who knows about it or has the book we are looking for (yesterday a friend was thanking me a pdf on lefebvre i sent and she got form a common friend).
i am glad we found out butler is coming (but this was broadly announced) and i was able to navigate the program of the feria del libro, in which is relatively impossible to see what is going on. unless you type a name in the search engine you have talks about macrobiotics and food, beside nation building and falun dafa and a book signing.
and i was glad to find out that today after writing this and going to puan i met a compañero de equipo, who works in unsam and is interested in the italians lots, and didn´t know about the visit either, anyway.
anyways i am starting my field work and is all about getting cotacted to the people, but also one the main reasons for letting me bother them is that i may contact them with new circles and pass information they might need so to avoid "no estaba sabiendo que había una fiesta en la plata asi que no me fui, pero de golpe todos se habian ido y me dejaron de casera" as a women in her late 20 told me on sunday on our way back to "capital" where i live and she lives "cama adentro".

random on politics and friendship
the last days as i started fieldwork again, i am rethinking the idea of my own political i have been dealing with. so far i have been trying to mutually enhance the possibilities '(now i can call it "potency") of myself and the people i interact with, thus i tried to act upon those things that constrain us all and act to enhance possibilities of all people i have a relation with. i have to recognize the limits and failures of this project, on the one hand there are multiple limits to my own practice of course, and we all know this, but then there is the problem of how far you define your friends and how far you can - do go, and how to act with those who you do not know but maybe could still work many things out. one of the things that make me think of this is the death of a friend who died of tuberculosis and just did not have enough to eat everyday. some options would have been to find a way to feed and put him under medical care, other use this event as a martyr demonstrating the need of social revolution, but none of this is an option. i think all his friends could have done more to help him probably, and i do believe that we need a social revolution, but none of this enunciations in itself is enough. the other dimension is of course what happens with all our non friends, and the absolutely problematic dichotomy friends and enemies which a politics of friensdship would present (i am reading this in scorer´s reall intersting thesis i will comment sometime when i finish it).
i am trying out at least to shift my spatial positions, and think of actions that may generate other forms of mutual "care" and enhancement of potency, and action with non friends.

spinoza on the body

For what the body can do no one has hitherto determined,
that is to say experience has taught no one hitherto what the body without being determined by the mind, can do, and what it cannot do form the laws of nature alone, in so far as the nature is considered merely as corporeal. For no one as yet has understood the struture of the body so accurately as to be able to explain all its functions,
not to mention the fact that many brutes which far surpass human sagacity and that sleep walkers in their sleep do very many things which they dare not do when awake. (Ethics 3rd part 101)

barrio privado
